If you need to order a custom drive shaft for your vehicle, you might not know exactly what parts of the drive shaft come equipped and what parts you are going to need to customize. Here are the steps that you will need to take in order to make sure that every part of the custom drive shaft matches your vehicle's needs and ensure that you will be able to use it immediately once it is installed.

1. Choose the Type of Shaft You Need

Your first step is to choose the type of shaft that you need. There are three main types of shafts. The first is the standard slip. The second is the reverse slip. The third is the CV or double cardan. You can determine which of these shafts you need by looking at the vehicle itself. If you have a single cylinder as an end attachment where the drive shaft is going to go, then you need a reverse slip. If you have a flange, then you will need a double cardan. Finally, if you have an end yoke, you will need to use a stand slip shaft. By knowing the type of drive shaft that you need, it will be easier for you to make the customizations later on since you have a body that you know will work.

2. Get the Measurements

Next, you are going to need to compare the different end attachments that will flank the shaft when it is installed and measure the distance between the two. In order to make sure that you are getting an accurate measurement, take a tape measure and run it from the area where the body of the drive shaft is going to hit to the other side's parallel location where the body of the drive shaft is going to hit. This will allow you to make sure that you have enough room for the drive cylinder. If you make any small mistakes measuring, there are usually standard measurements that you can choose from in order to even out the measurements that you took.

3. Choose the Material

Finally, depending on the measurements that you take, you will need to choose the material for your drive shaft. If you will need a very long drive shaft, you will need to choose a stronger material. Shorter drive shafts can be made out of lighter material without any problems because they don't need to hold as much weight. Talk to the company making your custom drive shaft for more information.
